The Peabody Mill Environmental Center, part of the Amherst Recreation Department, is located at the end of Brook Road in Amherst. The PMEC is adjacent to 600 acres of conservation land, with about 12 miles of well marked trails, ample parking, picnic tables, streams and ponds, a nature center with hands-on exhibits and the historic Peabody Mill foundation and sawyer’s cottage.

Field Trips at the PMEC.
Local classes have used the PMEC and grounds as an outdoor classroom for several years. We have hosted groups of all ages, preschool through high school. Most carpool to us, but parking can accommodate buses. Additional information on field trips to PMEC can be found here.

PMEC in the Classroom
PMEC can send a teacher to your classroom. PMEC teachers have been part of the Amherst and Mont Vernon schools for years. Most of our science and nature lessons are geared toward grades K through 4, but we can customize programs to accommodate any grade through high school. Additional information on classroom lessons can be found here.

Literature Links
Literature Links are lessons that introduce science concepts using literature. A story is read to the students and then materials are provided giving the students a hands-on science experience correlated to the story. These literature links, particularly geared to primary grades, can be taught in your classroom or during a field trip to PMEC. Click here for our Literature Links Brochure.
