Amherst at 250: Then and Now!
Parade Information In A Nutshell
This information is provide for those who plan to march or participate in the parade.
Where:
The parade will form at Wilkins School, Boston Post Road, Amherst, N.H.
Animals will gather at Spalding Field and enter the parade from there with direction from Puppy
Parade Chairs, Mary Beyers and Gabby Sellers.
The Bicycle Parade will gather at Knight Road Green (Corner of Main Street and Knight Road) and
move down Main Street to the Amherst Town Hall just before the main parade. Lion Ann Hoag is Chair.
Time:
Step Off: 10:30 Sharp!
Arrival at School: Between 9:45 and 10:00 a.m. There is often heavy traffic coming through town. Leave enough time!
Parking:
Cars: Behind school only
Bathrooms:
There will be bathrooms in the school available to people before the parade steps off.
Information:
The information tent is at the back of the front lawn opposite Wilkins front door. Checks, water and information are available.
Volunteers have on orange vests. Committee members have nametags.
Insurance Rules:
Each vehicle must have proof of insurance.
No handing out or throwing anything, including candy!
All animals must be under the control of their owners with dogs on a leash.
Parade Formation:
New Hampshire Dignitaries:
New Hampshire and Amherst Dignitaries who are not actively campaigning in the parade:
Governor, Senators, Congressman, Executive Councilor, State Senator, State
Representatives, County Commissioner, Town Manager, Selectmen, School
Boards. Please gather on tree side of entranceway and be prepared to line up in Wilkins entrance
driveway in above order behind the Parade Marshalls when the fire engines leave. You will move out
after the Parade Marshalls and the Citizens of the Year. A sign holder will precede and identify each group.
Campaigning Groups:
Please form on Jones Road and follow instructions of Phil Sellers,
Political Campaign Chairman. He will have on an orange vest and a nametag.
Floats and Mini Entries:
Please line up in front of the school between the two green areas; signs
will be posted. Judging is at 10:00-10:15 a.m. Move into spot of float in front of you as
it moves forward toward the end of the Wilkins School entrance driveway. Wait at
end of entrance driveway to be motioned into parade formation.
Antique Cars:
Pre WWII cars should line up on Boston Post Road behind the fire engines and move up to the
starting line when the fire trucks move out. After a five minute gap to give the fire department time to demonstrate the Yankee in front of the reviewing stand, the vintage cars will start the
parade route. Post '39 cars should line up along New Boston Road and move up to the right
shoulder of New Boston Road across from the Wilkins School and wait to be asked to move
forward into the parade in groups of six cars or so. All Vehicles must have proof of insurance.
Do not throw anything from the cars including candy during the parade (insurance regulations).
Fire Engines:
Line up on Boston Post Road opposite the school.
Please do not throw candy during the parade (Insurance regulations).
Marching Units, Bands:
Line up on the front lawn where you find your name posted. When
the fire engines move out, please face the street; move into the spot of the group
ahead of you as that group moves forward. When you come to the street, wait to
be motioned into the parade formation. There will be a volunteer to assist you.
Parade Animals:
Please gather at Spalding Field on Davis Lane. Enter the parade when
requested by Chairman Mary Beyers as quickly as possible.
